The Eureka math curriculum was created by Great Minds, a nonprofit that brought teachers and experts to craft a program based on the world’s most successful math programs. Eureka was built are the core principal that students need to know more then just what works when solving a problem – they need to understand why it works.
The curriculum goes beyond facts and formulas, teaching students to think about math conceptually. This helps students become not merely literate, but fluent in mathematics.
Topic-level tip sheets will be sent home for each unit to explain math strategies and models, provide key vocabulary, sample problems, and links to useful videos. Individual lesson practice pages will be sent home as well.
We use Guided Reading in the classroom in small groups. Your child will be assigned a guided reading level based on their decoding, comprehension, and fluency. The levels range from A-Z. Level A represents an entry level reader and level Z, the highest. I will work with your child in a small group setting to help them become a better reader. We will work throughout the year, increasing their level as they are developmentally ready.
The wonderful thing about Guided Reading is that your child will be reading on their own level!
Writing and Phonics
The Units of Study in Phonics, Grades K–2:
~provide a lean and concise instructional pathway in phonics that is realistic and doable, and that taps into kids’ skills and energy for tackling the fabulous challenge of learning to read and write,
~introduce high-leverage phonics concepts and strategies in a way that keeps pace with students' reading and writing and helps them understand when, how, and why they can use phonics to read and write,
~offer delightfully fun and engaging storylines, classroom mascots, songs, chants, rhymes, and games to help students fall head over heels in love with phonics and to create a joyous community of learners,
~align with state-of-the-art reading and writing workshops for a coherent approach in which terminology, tools, rituals, and methods are shared in ways that benefit both teachers and kids.
The Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing: A Workshop Curriculum for Kindergarten-Grade 5
The writing units of study help teachers provide their students with instruction, opportunities for practice, and concrete doable goals to help them meet and exceed any set of high standards. It is an understatement to say these units have been piloted many times. The teaching in these books has been planned, taught, revised, and retaught, through a cycle of improvement involving literally thousands of classrooms in schools dotting the globe. Each writing unit represents about five to six weeks of teaching, structured into three or four “bends in the road.” Rather than tackling the entire journey all at once, it’s easier to embark on this series of shorter, focused bends, pausing between each to regroup and prepare for the next.
“You cannot open a book without learning something.”
Please make sure to check your child’s Class DoJo daily for information on their day and check the class stories for any class news. Also, please review and sign your child’s agenda every night.
